Thousands see Gareth Gates switch on Christmas lights
News release: 19 November 2013
Gareth Gates and St Albans Mayor
Over 10,000 people flocked to St Albans to watch singing sensation Gareth Gates and St Albans Mayor turn on the Christmas lights on Sunday 17 November.
The Christmas lights switch-on was the highlight of an afternoon of entertainment and fun for visitors to the City centre. Performances from local groups and acts, including the Rock Choir, LivziEm and Excel Performing Arts entertained the crowds. Visitors also enjoyed a fun fair, circus skills and face painting. Santa’s Grotto, provided by Aylett Nurseries and run by the Rotary Club of St Albans Verulamium, raised at least £750 for the Typhoon Haiyan Emergency Appeal.
The Civic Society and St Albans Architectural and Archaeological Society hosted tours of the Clock Tower which displayed festive lights for the first time ever.
In addition, visitors were treated to a small market with traders selling seasonal goods and local restaurants and professional caterers offering festive food and seasonal drinks.
Cllr Annie Brewster, The Mayor of St Albans City and District Council, said: “It was wonderful to see so many people flocking to the City centre for an afternoon of entertainment, culminating in the Christmas lights switch-on. I want to thank Gareth Gates, who is starring in Cinderella at the Alban Arena, for joining me on stage to switch on the amazing lights. They have certainly brought some Christmas cheer to the City centre.”
Councillor Beric Read, Portfolio Holder for Community Engagement and Localism at St Albans City and District Council, said: “I am very grateful to the Mayor and Gareth Gates for their warm welcome, and for turning on our City’s Christmas lights. Thank you also to the traders and local restaurants who provided festive goodies for sale. This event is only the start of the festive season in St Albans. Please come again to enjoy the City’s very first German-style Christmas market which runs from 28 November to 21 December.”
Gareth Gates is playing Prince Charming in Cinderella at the Alban Arena from Friday 6 December 2013 to Sunday 5 January 2014. Other stars from the pantomime joined the singer on stage when he turned on the Christmas lights with the Mayor, Jemma Carlisle and Bob Golding.

Gareth Gates, CBeebies presenter Andy Day, Jemma Carlisle and Bob Golding will all be performing in the Alban Arena’s pantomime, Cinderella.
