Hi Folks
People very often ask us questions about the Internet and how we got our boards and How we have managed to get this and that to work, If we know we share it if not its another one of lifes mysteries so we thought we would pop the most asked questions and answers here for everyone In case they are useful.
Some websites don't start with www. does this mean they might be fake?
This is a good question and one that people often notice and get worried about especially with young children. The lack of the WWW. is common these days as browsers have improved and can now work that out for themselves, some sites are built without it and lock the option to put it in so if you do put it in it won't find the site. Funny? No if its different you will remember it! The WWW. is still there but the browser put's it in automatically
What Does HTTP stand for and why is it there?
Unlike the WWW. if the subject matter is on the Internet there must be an http:// at the beginning of the web address, otherwise the device doesn't know where to look for it ie on the device itself or on the World Wide Web. It has a fancy name which is Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. Again the browser should know it's there but some websites are set up so that you must put it in, mainly just to be different!
Why do companies and people who have their own internet places say "Visit our Website, and like us on Facebook and follow us on twitter? whats the difference between a website and twitter or Facebook?
This is a really good question and yes there is a subtle difference Facebook and Twitter instagram etc are Huge social media sites which offer you a page or a space to be part of it, its already built for you and all you need to do is join the dots if you like , let it take you by the hand, pop up your pictures and your Holiday Vids where dad falls down a hole on the beach and you share and everyone enjoys. You have to be careful with these sorts of places if you have loaded the video / picture content within the actual software as it may not be easily available if you have a portable device as it adjusts and you get a watered down version people can change it to the desktop version but generally they can't be bothered lol Its not technically your Site as its a space within a huge site its your space if you like pre built and good to go.
you can search the net and get whats called "webspace" It can be free or you pay for it its often owned by Yahoo, and Google, plusnet and many many more. We chose google webspace because it should connect to other places easily, although having said that its an absolute so and so to make Twitter agree with it and get the twitter feeds working lol The site can then be connected to everything Powered by Google. Some webspace does have what's known as a "layout" already installed and you can start to compose what you want in the various sections but its a complete blank canvas and you have to build it yourself you can't just write in it or put up a picture without using things like HTML ( Hyper text markup language) which is the protocol for adding to the layout with new sections and dividers and lines , adding text in fact all content and colour. If you aren't sure what you are doing then just use the layout that's on offer which should allow you to put something in but it may not be a great deal and not where you really want it. This is your website and you can make it be whatever you want, hard work but well worth it
Thats all for now folks
