Pop Idol runner-up and West End star Gareth Gates took to the Huddersfield New College stage on Thursday to mark the launch of a new Gareth Gates Academy at the college.
In front of a packed-out Boilerhouse Theatre he treated over 100 students to an acoustic performance of classic songs such as Unchained Melody, Summer Of 69, Livin’ On A Prayer, Spirit In The Sky, and Don’t Stop Me Now. The final song only came about after a rapturous call for an encore following a version of Spirit In The Sky which saw students taking to the mic with the pop star for the choruses.
Gareth’s appearance at the college, along with his mother Wendy, was to announce that the Gareth Gates Academy would be coming to Huddersfield New College each Tuesday night starting on the 11th March. The Academy, for students from the age of five, teaches students how to dance, sing and act. The college is the second venue for the Academy, following the success of the first in Bradford which was launched two years ago.
Huddersfield New College has been chosen as a venue after Wendy paid a visit to the campus and was impressed by the facilities on offer for performing arts students.
Before his performance Bradford-born Gareth was given a tour for the college’s extensive Performing Arts facilities which have been integral to the college’s selection as a venue. Afterwards he popped into a Science lesson to surprise a star-struck Musharaf Asghar, who tugged at the nation’s heartstrings after struggling to overcome his own stammer on Channel 4?s Educating Yorkshire late last year.
Videos of the performances, including the moment students Lawrence Guntert and Henry Smith grabbed a selfie on stage with Gareth, are available to view on the Huddersfield Examiner’s website.
