Gareth Gates:
The Beginning…
Gareth Paul Gates born 12th July 1984, Bred in Bradford and always knew he wanted to be a singer. He joined Bradford Cathedral choir at age 9 and by the time he was 11 he sang a solo for the Queen when she visited in 1997.He was originally discovered on the ITV talent show Pop Idol and walked away as runner-up to Will Young. After the disappointment of not winning wore off, Gates was signed by record label BMG and decided to peruse his career in singing and released his first ever single a cover of “Unchained Meloday.” it scored the UK charts all the way to number one.

In the UK alone Gareth sold 3.5 million records, released 3 albums and had 4 UK number one singles. However big part of Gareth’s career was his theater involvement. The musical theater first attracted him when he starred in the line up for ‘A spoon full of Stiles & Drewe.’ In 2009 Gates confirmed with the Daily Mail that he was retiring from the music industry to enter the world of theater, kicking off with the lead role in ‘Joseph and the amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.’
In 2004 rumors were spread that the record label BMG had dropped Gareth due to low sales, however at the time this was denied by both him and the company. Then in 2006 it was officially exposed that the record label had indeed dropped Gareth Gates. Things started to look up later that year. Appearing on the documentary ‘Whatever happened to Gareth Gates?” he announced he now had a new record deal with UMTV.
Many know that Gareth Gates has had a long journey with his speech, music was his way to escape although over time it began to wear him down. He could not pre record an interview without struggling and finally with much courage decided to join the McGuire program. He first appeared on the Jonathan Ross show in 2007 as one of his first interviews since the speech therapy. Gareth is now a qualified and trained instructor for the course and still to this day works on his speech on a daily basis.

In 2013 Gates was on the show ‘The Big Reunion’ And although his singing career was performed solo, himself, Dane Bowers, Kenzie, Adam Rickitt and Kavana would form a super group called ‘5th Story.’ The show was a big hit, with fans of him tuning in every week for a flashback in time. What you may not know about him is that he also an accomplished musician being able to play the piano and guitar to a high slandered. Throughout his career so far Gates has reached success in many fields.
As well as his musical career he also has appeared on many entertainment shows such as Family
Fortune, Don’t Forget The Lyrics, All Star Mr & Mrs and Dancing On Ice. He is a loved character and many find it a delight to listen to his music and see him on our screens.

He achieved Grad 8 in both piano and guitar at school.
