Singer and stage star Gareth Gates, 31, has an all-singing, all-dancing daughter, Missy, 6, with ex wife Suzanne Mole. Here, he tells us about mammoth iPad bills, Disney films and sightseeing in Edinburgh.
Hi Gareth! What do you think you’re like as a dad?
I’m quite laid back. There are times I should maybe be stricter but she’s definitely my little princess. Every time Missy gives me those puppy dog eyes, I melt!

Uh-oh, what do you give in to that you probably shouldn’t?
Just the usual: late nights and more recently, buying lots of apps on her iPad. I made the mistake of giving her the password a few months ago and I had a bill for like £200. I soon changed the password!

What’s the one thing you love to do together?
I’m a very outdoorsy person, as is Missy, so we go and see as many sights as we can, wherever we are. During half term she stayed with me in Edinburgh – we visited Edinburgh Castle and viewed the sights. I am certainly all for her learning as much as she can.

Does she come and watch you on stage?
Missy loves to watch daddy perform – she insists that she sits on the front row! She’s great at dancing, she’s doing all of her classes and she sings all the time. I think she definitely wants to follow my footsteps. I’ve also got her playing instruments, she plays the piano and started recently on the guitar.
Wow, impressive! Are there any films you enjoy watching together?
We’re both big fans of Disney films, from all the classics that were out when I was a kid Beauty and the Beast right through to modern day stuff like Frozen. And all the Pixar movies like Despicable Me – all those kid’s films that adults are able to enjoy as well.

What about books?
Well she is a very fast reader (laughs), and gets into a different book every evening so it always changes! As a young child, she loved stories like The Gruffalo.
Is there a particular meal she loves?
When she was young I introduced her to more unusual foods, so she loves eating sushi and olives, the sort of foods that children would usually turn their noses up at.
When Missy’s naughty, how do you tell her off?
I’m really not lying when I say this but she’s very, very rarely naughty – she’s a really well behaved child. There are very few times when I have to tell her off.
