Yesterday we set off from our holiday home in Suffolk to the gig at Peterborough. I was very excited, as I have not seen Gareth since the panto last Christmas. We arrived early at 5 0'clock, and Keith went up to see if the doors were open , as I needed the ladies. A very helpful lady told him if we parked around the back in the car park, and bought a ticket, they would refund the money. So we did that, although it was a very small car park, which would not take more than a dozen cars, so thank goodness we were early.
We found a nice little place to eat off the main road, and the young man serving us told us that a lot of celebrities were coming in later for a party, he couldn't remember whether it was the cast of Eastenders or Emmerdale. I told him we were off to see our own celebrity, Gareth Gates.
We went round to the theatre to be seated, and I was very impressed with the venue, it was nice decor, with wide aisles and comfortable sets. There were quite a few diehard Gareth fans that I knew, we sat with Ann and Peter, Sharon and Caitie, and next to them was Kirsty and her mum. But I was disappointed to see it was only half full, especially as Gareth had been at Bradford Pride all day, where there were literally thousands of people.
The support act was on first, and he clearly had some local fans, as there were cheers and whistles from the back. We all clapped him politely, but we were by then getting anxious to see and hear Gareth. He bounced onto the stage, full of energy, no -one would have guessed he had been at another gig, and then travelled to Peterborough afterwards.
I have to say the set of songs he sang were amazing, I really enjoyed them. Only a handful of his own, my memory isn't great, but Sha la la la particularly sticks in my mind, cos he brought the mike over to me whilst I was singing the chorus, and held it right over me with that twinkle in his eye, which made me laugh. I touched his leg playfully in a gesture meaning, go away, and he laughed even more.
Being Gareth he interacted with as many people as he could, he saw Ann and gripped her hand, which reminds me again, how much I love this caring man, it meant a lot to her , I know. He also had folks up on the stage with him, and Ann did her bit, adding her own version to the end of the chorus, which made us all laugh.
We all congregated outside, it had cooled down quite a bit by then, I chatted with Kimberley, whom I know from Twitter, and her husband Simon, a lovely couple, and I was impressed that Kimberley has supported Gareth avidly since she was 13 years old.
Eventually the man came out, and said we could all go in to see Gareth, a couple at a time. We were at the back, with only Ann and Peter behind us, and when we got in there, Gareth gave me such a big hug, it truly lifted me. I told him what a fabulous evening I had, and he was pleased. he is in a very good place right now, his voice was superb and strong, and his speech was excellent, he has even acquired a slight London accent I noticed, although I know he will never forget his roots. Keith took my photo with him, which I will try and post later. I told him we were coming to see him in Ashford, and thanked him for responding to my tweets, I am guilty of not tweeting to Gareth very often, so its lovely to get a response when I do. He thanked us for coming, and then we went out to say goodbye to everyone. Our journey back to Suffolk was just over an hour, which wasn't bad at all, and I am on a high today after seeing him, such is the Gareth effect.!!!
