I'm trying for the second time to write about Gareth.Last time I got right to the end and I must have done something wrong as it disappeared into the ether
Here we go:
I was visiting family in Bradford back in 1999 when I was invited to go to a concert at Dixon's College which my great nephew Chris attended.Part way through I was told to look out for boy with a super voice who's name was Gareth.Although he had a bad stammer it wasn't there when he sang. When he came on stage and began to sing I was completely taken over by what I heard. He sang a standard song and later sang"Flying without Wings".When he finished there was loud clapping and screaming from the girls. He definitely deserved it.From that moment I was hooked.
At the end of the performance I went to congratulate him but he couldn't speak to me because of his stammer but he gave me a beautiful smile. On another visit I heard him sing in Bradford Cathedral which again was most enjoyable and again in another concert.Later I was told he had reached the final 10 on Pop Idol.Needless to say I started to watch it.The rest is history.
Knowing of Gareth's enormous courage and his lovely singing voice revived my love of music. After finding myself on my own I hadn't listened to music for many months.
Gareth used to sleepover occasionally at Chris's who's Mum always said what a polite, funny boy he was.He attended Chris's 18th birthday party where I saw him joining in the line dancing.Chris and Gareth studied music in the excellent music department at the college.Chris has moved on and is now a qualified tennis coach. He always said that Gareth was a much better musician /singer than he is.They both entered Pop Idol but Chris dropped out at the last 100.
I have watched Gareth grow into the superbly talented, nice young man he is now.He is happily married to Suzanne and they have their beautiful little daughter Missy.
Gareth will go on and on from strength to strength and I hope so much he will finally get the wide recognition he richly deserves.
Like his miriad of followers I will always be watching where he goes in the future. It will have to be from a distance as "I don't get around much anymore".[That's the title of an old classic].
There is one thing I really wish he would do and that is to record an album on which he uses the beautiful classical voice I first heard developing over 11 years ago.I would also love him to play piano and guitar on it.
I hope you find my little epistle interesting but I think it's time I stopped"rabbiting on".
Frankie
