We travelled to Yorkshire via Worcester, as we went to visit family on the way. When we set off on Thursday morning, it wasn't just raining, it was sheeting down, which meant the traffic was slow, and the roads were slippery, so we had to take our time. Keith and I took it in turns to drive, and we finally got to June's house just after 4 in the afternoon.
We had a cup of tea, then realised time was ticking on, and we needed to get changed. June had ordered a taxi, as parking is not good in that area, so we all piled in feeling very excited, and Jean and I , who were sitting in the back, managed to get our seat belt crossed over each others', which caused us all some laughs.
I was impressed with the theatre, it was very big, and it had a very nice area with tables and chairs where you could sit whilst you were waiting to go in, so no wet and cold to put up with, and no stage door either. One of the cast told us they didn't have one, and Gareth would walk through the foyer just like the rest of us after the show. The stage was flat, and sitting in the front row, as I was, you felt as if you were with them. The seats were set around the stage tiering upwards, so when they performed, they played to each part of the theatre.
Gareth wasn't in the first scene, so initially I was wishing it would be over, as it was about computer geeks and set in an American High school in the 1970s. Everything changed when he came on, he plays a nasy person, selfish, vain , self seeking, and a bully. The way he handled the role was brilliant, I have given more details in my blog, but not only did he make himself so believable, he also played it with humour, his speech was excellent, and his American accent was great too.
The whole cast did a great job, and the energy they put into their dancing as well as their singing was infectious, it was plain to see just how much they all enjoyed doing the show. They didn't have much in the way of scenery, it was mostly done by cardboard cards with pictures and writing on, but it worked, it was different.
I did like the joke they made about if Gareth became a celebrity, then he would be on a reality show, or something like that. I have always applauded Gareth for being proud of where he came from, and not being ashamed ,or feeling he has to explain it, and also for having a sense of humour about it. When they took their bows at the end, Gareth spotted June and I and said hello to us and grinned.
Afterwards we went to wait for him in the foyer, but were a bit worried cos we seemed to be the only ones. Thank goodness Keith had the presence of mind to go up the stairs where the bar was, and found him seeing fans at the other end.
We went up to wait our turn, and first June went up, and he hugged her, and looked really pleased to see her . It was really funny, whilst Gareth was posing with her for the photo Keith was taking, he sneezed really loudly. June didn't move a muscle, I don't think she cared if he had any germs or not, and Keith joked something about that picture being worth a fortune. Anyway he took a proper one, and as soon as he has uploaded it, I will email it to you June.
Then it was my turn. He gave me a lovely hug, and I kissed him on the cheek. Then he wrote a nice message on my programme and signed it” love Gareth”, then I asked if he had time for a quick picture, and he said “ Of course.”
It was all over in seconds, but how precious those seconds are!. He makes us all feel so great, he is so appreciative of his fans, but I think we are the lucky ones, that he gives his time so willingly to meet us and pose with us, and it's never too much trouble.
June remembered she had n't asked him to sign her programme, so she asked him, and he willingly did it, then we moved away to allow other fans to have their turn. Soon after that he got himself a drink from the bar, and went over to spend time with his family. We waited until Jon, June's husband came to pick us up, and left the theatre the same time as Gareth's party, who went off in a different direction.
Keith and I had an amazing time, and I want to say a big thank you to June and Jon, for not only putting us up and making us feel so welcome, but also for giving up their bed to us! Also thank you to Ben and Sammi for moving around and sleeping elsewhere willingly. What a lovely family you all are, and we really did appreciate it!
We look for ward to returning the welcome when Gareth is in panto at Canterbury.
