Gareth Gates and the youngsters Bradford’s own Pop Idol was back in his home city on Thursday.
Gareth Gates, who shot to fame as a runner-up in the TV talent show, Pop Idol, in 2002, performed a short acoustic set for the winners of the annual Aspire2Work awards which honours learners, tutors and employers.
The ceremony at the city’s Midland Hotel celebrated young people who have fought back against the economic odds with the help of the Aspire2Work pre-apprenticeship programme for 16 to 18-year-olds.
“It’s great to be involved with a local organisation that is working so hard for local young people,” said Gareth.
Sarah Ward was among the winners to receive their awards from Gareth, a former Bradford Cathedral choirboy. Collecting the ‘Most dedicated learner’ award, Sarah paid tribute to the programme, saying: “Without Aspire2work I would have been sitting around doing nothing. But now I’ve got a great group of friends, I’m doing well in my qualifications and I’m planning my career.”
Aspire-i managing director Caroline Harrison said, “Local and national figures show that it’s a really tough employment market out there for everyone at present, but especially so for young people”.
“It would be easy to get downhearted but this group of young people, with help from the Aspire2work programme, have worked really hard in the face of adversity to get themselves on their feet.”
