GARETH GATES LIGHTS UP DARTFORD
10:49pm Thursday 29th November 2012
Last Saturday saw ex Pop Idol finalist Gareth Gates help switch on Dartford’s Christmas lights in style.
Despite suffering from a throat infection, Gates (28) arrived as dusk fell ready to wow Dartford with a medley of well-loved songs. The crowd swamped the high street, blocking it to shoppers, all eager to catch a glimpse of Gates. One such fan failed to contain her excitement; Maddie Ireland from Bexley told how she has been a die-hard fan of Gates since the early days of Pop Idol, “I couldn’t miss an opportunity to see him in my home town – he’s just amazing.” Reported the Broadcast Media student (20).
Gates wooed the crowd with his rendition of his number one hit Anyone of Us, followed by his cover of Bon Jovi’s Livin’ on a Prayer. Dartford sang along in excitement. When Gates sang Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody it evolved into a joint effort with Dartford filling the gaps as Gates offered the crowd the microphone.
In between songs Gates left the stage to greet his cheering audience. Those lucky enough to be at the front of the crowd were rewarded with a high 5 from the former Dancing on Ice star. The newly separated Gates was watched adoringly by his young daughter Missy, Gates acknowledged her on numerous occasions before lifting Missy onto the stage to join him for his last song. Missy took it all in her stride and was not fazed by the milling crowd in front of her.
As Gates came to the end of his set he was joined on stage by local Olympic hero Adam Gemili to treat Dartford to the main event of the evening, the illumination of the town centre. The crowd were not disappointed. As Gates flicked the switch Dartford glowed in Christmas splendour.
Surprisingly, Gates didn’t succeed in winning everybody’s hearts; 7 year old Jasmine informed us that the man of the moment for her was, naturally, Father Christmas. However if you would like to see Gates again you can see him at the Marlowe Theatre in Canterbury, where he is performing in Sleeping Beauty throughout the pantomime season
