Gareth Gates performs in Boogie Nights at Venue Cymru

WITH a name like Gareth Gates you'd expect there to be some Welsh blood, but the singer had no idea until a recent family history tree revealed his great-great-grandfather came from Wales.
The former Pop Idol star seems pleased by the fact, saying: “I think it means I'm about an eighth Welsh. Maybe I got my voice from my great-great-granddad – he was from my mum's side but I'm not going to start supporting Wales in rugby though,” he joked.
The former cathedral chorister was at the Manchester’s Royal Northern College of Music before the finals of Pop Idol, where he was pipped to the title by Will Young.
“It was an incredible time, and I have no regrets at all about appearing on Pop Idol,” he said. “But it was surreal being a complete unknown then walking down the street having your shirt ripped off.
“It was a crazy time, but I was very young and so I enjoyed it. My family and friends have always kept me grounded I've had the same group of close friends all my life.”
Gareth has since starred as Marius in Les Misérables on tour, and took the title role in Joseph And The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.
Next month he's at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru in Boogie Nights – The '70s Musical alongside Osmond brothers Jimmy, Merrill and Jay, plus Louisa Lytton, Andy Abraham, Chico and Shane Richie Junior. It tells the story of Roddy O'Neil, set in a provincial town in the height of the disco craze.
Gareth plays Dean, a DJ, and he's clearly excited by the role: “My character Dean gets the girl in the end which is always nice. I can't wait to sing Puppy Love with The Osmonds, I'm going to sing the lead in that which will be a huge honour.
“It’s going to be a really fun night, and I'm looking forward to coming to Llandudno especially now that I know I have some Welsh blood in me!
“When I'm on the stage sometimes my stammer does crop up but I deal with it, and I'm working on it constantly.
“I use the McGuire Programme to help me and I've qualified as a speech coach and see myself as a role model for others who are trying to overcome speech difficulties.
“I couldn't even speak as a child but I discovered I could sing and so that's why I've made music all my life.”
