I was laid up for a couple of days last week with the disgusting vomiting virus. It leaves you feeling very weak, and not able to eat much, but with Boogie Nights booked for Thursday, I was only thankful that it had happened earlier, and was just getting back on my feet by Wednesday.
On Wednesday Keith decided he was achey and tired and might have it, although I explained to him, you do know when you have got it, cos it hits you like a raging bull, and knocks you for 6! Bless him, man flu. ;D
We had all the tickets and were going with Vera, Mick and Rob, so one way or another, we would get those tickets to them. Well luck was on our side, cos we were both ok to go, the ride up there on the motorway was fast and good cos all the traffic was coming out of London, but we then spent 40 mins just going a couple of miles off the motorway into Dartford town centre. However do people cope with such traffic jams every day!
We met up with Vera and the lads, then as we had time to spare, went to Mac Donalds for a coffee and a quick bite. Then it was time to take our seats. My only disappointment was when I booked I was told that row B was first row, but it wasn't , although we did have a very good view of the stage, and no-one sitting in front of us.
There was a warm up man who I am afraid didn't do it for me. I suppose it's not an easy job, but he wasn't strong enough, he didn't hold the audience properly, and it was quite amusing to watch cos he invited someone to run up to the stage when they answered a question correctly about one of the Osmond's first no 1s or something. The woman was so disgusted when someone else won it with what she thought was an incorrect answer, she stood at the side heckling him, and he went of to avoid her. All this for a packet of polos or something like that! ;D
Anyway then the show started, Chico and Andy first and it was great to see Gareth come on very quickly. In my opinion they all blended really well together, Shane Ritchie jr has much the demeanour of his dad, who conceived the idea I believe when it toured before. He has the cheekiness and arrogance necessary for the character he portrays, a womanising serial cheat and liar, and he did it well. He can be forgiven for not having a great voice cos he does have a stage presence.
Andy' s voice was really good, and his flambouyant coat made me laugh, as did all the dodgy clothes so synonymous with this era, including Gareth's green suit.
Chico was also good, he is a great fun entertainer, he made me laugh, as did they all, nobody seemed nervous, it all seemed natural and not forced, and fun! ;D
Louisa Lytton formerly from Eastenders played a cute little cockney girl who falls in love with the wrong man, gets messed around so much, and eventually finds true love with Dean ( Gareth) Why did it take her so long lol.
If I am honest, the story line was a bit weak, and the pairings were not convincing. Although she shares a kiss with Gareth when they finally find true love, I didn't get that important feeling that it was right, I didn't feel the chemistry, but maybe I am expecting too much on the first night. However, there were huge cheers and whistles. ;D
However, I cannot fault their performances, the beautiful songs they sang, and I haven't started on Gareth yet! Together, they made a great cast, and it was a fun show from beginning to end.
The Osmonds are a legend in their own right, and deserve respect as a family with over 54 years in the business staying on top of their game. Their songs are timeless and beautiful, and I particularly enjoyed the one they sang against the back drop of images of them when they were young and growing up. It was a brilliant idea to add a freshness to their act by including Gareth as the main singer in Puppy Love. They did it in such a way that we were asked what they should sing next, and all suggestions were turned down until we screamed out PUPPY LOVE.
Gareth sang it from his heart, I had to choke back the tears, he mesmerised the audience, then we all joined in with him, and afterwards the applause just went on and on and on. He spoke to them afterwards saying what a huge honour it was .
Even if I wasn't an ardent fan, it would be plain to see just how much Gareth made that show with his character and his presence. I will give more details in my blog, which is to follow, so if you don't want to know before you see it, then it's best not to read it.
His voice is far the best whatever he sings, and he does it so effortlessly. The scene where he comes out dressed only in a very short pair of shorts as an indian had the audience in stitches. it's not what he says, it's his facial expressions. I have always said apart from the singing, Gareth was born to entertain, one of these days he will make an amazing comedy entertainer, and nobody could take their eyes off him.
Apart from the dodgy green suit he wore some nice outfits, looked gorgeous as usual, and was clearly having the time of his life. I like the way the Osmonds took him as one of their own, he stood with them, Jimmy acknowledged his performance several times, he also came on and announced a couple of times, and was given the stage to perform SITS, and was able to say " This is one of my own songs!" and of course it had people rocking in the aisles.
Although billed as the Stars, and rightly so, The Osmonds only appared twice in intervals of 15 minutes or so during the whole show of over 2 hours. They were content to let the younger entertainers have their platform, which I think was lovely. I am delighted for Gareth that he was able to be a part of a show wich included such top names, and I am sure it will open even more doors for him in the future. ;D
After the show we went to the stage door, but I was doubtful if Gareth could come out, cos with the Osmond fans, it might get just too crowded, but how wrong could I be? First Shane came out, he is a popular lad, and the girls were round him for a while, then he went. I could hear the Osmond fans saying they wanted to see Gareth too, they hadn't realised how good he was etc etc ;D
Then all of a sudden there was a shout from over the side, that we were at the wrong door, and the mass of people ran over to the side. I followed slowly, I had a sixth sense that wasn't right, and then whoosh, out came a car with the Osmonds inside, so the fans were not going to get to meet them.
I turned back towards the dor, saying to Vera, " We need to stop here, I think Gareth will come out soon." and the words died on my lips as the door swung open and there he stood, and nobody there to greet him.
Well only me and Vera, how great for us was that! I waited for Vera to go up, then she waited for me, nobody moved, so as he held his arms out I took the plunge! He was his usual gorgeous self, and I have a pic, which with the other one, I hope I can post soon. Still waiting for the lady to come.
We stood back then, in fact we headed for home, Gareth was surrounded by new fans, how wonderful, Osmond fans were now also Gareth fans . I did manage to tell him he was fantastic, and it looked like he was having the time of his life, and he told me he was, it was huge fun. ;D
I am bursting with pride about Gareth, and can't wait to write my blog about the whole thing. A truly amazing evening!
I do hope you can all get to see this show, Gareth just gets better with time, and experience. You really can't afford to miss it.
