Gareth Gates showers stardust on Foster Care Fortnight
Tuesday, 16 April, 2013
Star of stage and screen Gareth Gates has thrown his support behind the Fostering Network’s annual awareness campaign, Foster Care Fortnight (13-26 May) to encourage people to get in the frame and think about fostering.
If all the children in care in the UK today were brought together they would fill the Olympic Stadium in London. The UK’s foster carers look after most of these children, almost 62,000 on any one day. And with the need to recruit 9,000 new foster carers across the UK during 2013, the Fostering Network and our supporters are asking you to open your heart, and your home, and put yourself in the frame to consider becoming a foster carer.
Gareth Gates, the son of foster carers and a long term supporter of the Fostering Network, took time out of his hectic touring schedule to say: “I am proud to be from a fostering family. My parents put themselves in the frame to care for some of the UK’s most vulnerable children. They offered a home, security, stability and love to children because they wanted to make a difference to their lives.”
Gareth knows from personal experience what a difference being part of a fostering family can make, not only to the children that you care for, but to your own family.
He continued: “Fostering had a positive effect on my family, it helped me learn more about myself and develop a better understanding of others. I hope that this Foster Care Fortnight, you and your family consider putting yourselves in the frame and becoming foster carers.”
Jackie Sanders, head of media and campaigns at the Foster Network, said: “We are delighted that Gareth is spreading his stardust on Foster Care Fortnight to highlight the need for people all across the UK to get themselves in the frame and to become foster carers.
“Foster carers do a superb job in providing stability, support and guidance for some of the UK’s most vulnerable children and we hope that during Foster Care Fortnight many more amazing people will consider becoming foster carers.”
