Celebs scramble for 2012 title in MasterChef challenge
The ever popular Celebrity MasterChef returns this August, in a new early evening time slot on BBC Two, and with a fresh host of well-known faces from the fields of sport, music and show business battling to become Celebrity MasterChef 2012. John Torode and Gregg Wallace once again put the celebrities’ palates to the test – but they must get through seven challenges to prove their culinary worth before making it through to the final eight. The following 16 celebrities will be concocting a wide-range of culinary creations: actors Laila Rouass, George Layton, Emma Kennedy and Anne Charleston; TV presenters Michael Underwood, Zoe Salmon, Diarmuid Gavin and Richard McCourt; from the world of sport, Olympic swimmer and presenter Steve Parry, gold Olympic medallist Rebecca Romero, and former international England footballer Danny Mills; radio presenter Jamie Theakston, comedian Jenny Éclair; and from the world of music, singers Javine, Gareth Gates and the legendary Cheryl Baker.
The 30 programmes will run across six weeks, with the first four weeks concentrating on the heats. Four celebrities will once again compete each week facing a series of eight challenges designed to assess their culinary skills, including the famed Mystery Box Test and a daunting Skills Test. Then it’s on to the mass catering challenge with the celebs being let loose on hundreds of hungry customers at mammoth locations including The Royal Holloway University and Chessington World of Adventures. Next they face The Classic Recipe Test and finally the contestants must cook their best show-stopping dish in a last bid for a place in the final eight. The results of this test will see one celebrity go home while the remaining three hopefuls must survive the famed Pressure Test when they cook a busy lunch service at a top London restaurant. After just an hour of learning the ropes they are let loose to prepare dishes for paying customers, under the watchful eye of the Head Chef. The day’s formidable second task comes in the form of the Head Chef’s popular dish, as the celebrities are asked to recreate his recipe to exacting standards. The battle for a coveted place in the final eight reaches its climax when the remaining celebrities face the infamous Critic’s Table. This year they must cook a faultless three-course meal for not only John and Gregg, but also three guest judges who know exactly what they’re going through – past Celebrity MasterChef champions and finalists and semi finalists, including amongst others, 2010 champion Lisa Faulkner and reigning champion Phil Vickery. The celebs must impress their culinary peers to earn a place in the next round, and be one step closer to being crowned Celebrity MasterChef Champion. Two celebrities from each week go through to week five to be whittled down across the week after facing more nail-biting challenges including; cooking lunch for brasserie customers on a 2000 strong cross-channel passenger ferry, catering on the set of New Tricks, facing the notorious restaurant critics, and the awe-inspiring Chef’s Table under the watchful eye of acclaimed Michelin starred chef Alexis Gauthier – an experience to set the most hardened professional chefs quaking in their whites! The final programme culminates as always with the cook off. John and Gregg want to see the three finalists draw on all the skills they have learnt during their MasterChef journey when they must cook their best three-course meal. The judges must then decide who the true cooking star is and worthy of becoming Celebrity MasterChef 2012, following in the footsteps of previous winners Phil Vickery, Lisa Faulkner, Jayne Middlemiss, Liz McClarnon, Nadia Sawalha and Matt Dawson.
